Architecture for London

London

Architecture for London are an award winning, RIBA Chartered architecture practice dedicated to the creation of sustainable buildings and places.

We have a portfolio of unique homes that are finely crafted to our clients’ requirements. Our work includes both new build houses and alterations to existing homes, from London house extensions and basements to lofts and garden rooms. Each provides inspiring, light filled spaces for living and entertaining.

We have extensive experience with heritage properties, where there is often a need to balance sensitive refurbishment with carefully considered contemporary intervention. Projects are designed holistically with architecture, landscape, joinery and interiors each interlocking to form a coherent whole.

We can achieve Passivhaus standards with dramatically improved thermal performance, creating warmer and more comfortable homes.

Our residential projects are widely recognised, with recent shortlistings in the AJ Small Projects, AJ Retrofit and NLA Don’t Move Improve awards.

Highbury House

This Highbury house extension and refurbishment transforms a Victorian terraced property in a conservation area. The brief was to create open plan spaces with an improved relationship to the garden, and a kitchen that could be enjoyed as a social space. The original kitchen was dark, and had a very low ceiling height of just over two metres.

Islington Flat

This Islington refurbishment improves a 36sqm studio flat to create an open plan kitchen & living room with a new separate bedroom to the rear of the plan. The property forms part of a Grade II listed crescent in Islington, built in 1860. Many of the townhouses were subsequently converted to flats in the 1970’s.

Bethnal Green House

In this project two neighbours in Bethnal Green pooled their resources to extend their Victorian terraced houses at the same time. AFL was commissioned to develop a dual two-storey extension to the rear with a single-storey side infill at either side of each house.

Highgate House

This Highgate house extension improves a late Victorian property. The design stems from a desire to create an inverted architecture and landscape: one that might appear to have been excavated from an existing solid rather than constructed from the ground up.

Dartmouth Park House

This house extension in Dartmouth Park is designed to better connect the property to a large garden. A new dining room with oak framed sliding doors leads to a landscaped terrace, and a separate ‘glass box’ evening room allows uninterrupted garden views. Between these two spaces a sheltered outdoor kitchen is created.

Barnsbury House

This Barnsbury house extension improves and enlarges an early Victorian terraced property. At upper ground level, the rear extension facade provides both privacy and views to the garden from the enlarged bathroom behind. This is achieved using an intricate glass and corten steel screen, with varying degrees of transparency.
