The studio of John Maniscalco Architecture produces work based on two principles – creating livable, modern spaces and engaging clients in the design process. Our approach takes the particular needs, desires, and personality of each client and utilizes them to shape a unique architectural solution.
With a sensitivity to physical context, function, technology and economic factors, JMA produces architecture that is responsive, honest, and well-crafted. We focus on the fundamental elements of architecture: quality materials, careful consideration of space and light, and clarity of design from concept to detailing. Sustainability and renewable resources are integrated into every aspect of our design process, and shape our decision making from site placement to material specification. Through a highly collaborative and fluid process, we introduce our clients to possibilities through design, but their needs and desires are entirely reflected in what we do.

Photo: Matthew Millman CUBE HOUSE: The introduction of a two-story atrium (which is open to the sky) brings the exterior into the very center of the Cube House, becoming the spatial organizing gesture, allowing all areas of the house to partake of the light, air, and landscape (both earth and sky) that this protected garden provides. COLE VALLEY HILLSIDE: Tucked into a hillside site at the end of a cul-de-sac, Cole Valley Hillside is a transformation of a 1930’s Deco house in San Francisco’s Cole Valley, addressing a number of complicated site conditions. Photo: Matthew Millman FAY RESIDENCE: The vertical addition and complete rebuild transforms a typical ranch house in Kentfield to an open and airy modern home. Carefully arranged spaces paired with expansive fenestration allow for effortless indoor-outdoor living at the Fay Residence. Photo: Cesar Rubio PARNASSUS RESIDENCE: Untouched in almost 100 years and in serious disrepair, the Parnassus Residence was completely rebuilt to accommodate the needs of a young family of six. The house was reorganized around a unifying vertical stair core, backed by a wall of glass, flooding all floors with light while providing a vertical spatial connection for the entire house. Photo: Stephania Serena ALVARADO RESIDENCE: The Alvarado Residence brings a modern spatial feel to a standard SF zero-lot-line home through the insertion of a series of minimal space defining elements. STANYAN RESIDENCE: A poorly built, dark, neo-Edwardian spec home was transformed into a light-filled modern home at the Stanyan Residence in Cole Valley. The intensive storage needs of the family were used as the inspiration for a system of custom millwork that serves as both spatial divider and storage.
