Vineyard Retreat
SLLA integrated this wine country property with its distinctive surrounding landscape. Nestled among vineyards, this tailored garden projects a contemporary and refined tone.
The practice of Scott Lewis Landscape Architecture (SLLA) is founded on a distinct appreciation for each site’s unique characteristics. The firm’s philosophy is to combine an emphasis on site sensitivity with a clear understanding of client objectives, an appreciation of architectural intent and an interest in progressive materials. SLLA solutions both engage the user and enhance the landscape.
The office, established in 1993 in San Francisco, provides complete landscape architectural design services, including master planning, site planning and design, construction management and post-construction site guidance. SLLA areas of expertise include estates, roof gardens, wineries, residences, public sites, historic properties and institutional projects. SLLA work has been published widely, and has received national and local honors from the American Society of Landscape Architects.
Scott R. Lewis, Principal, and the firm’s professional staff have extensive experience in managing complex commissions that require broad technical sophistication. SLLA’s projects typically demand intensive service and a single-source overview of site work. The office collaborates closely with other design consultants. These cohesive partnerships are evident in SLLA-designed estates, historic gardens and institutional sites in the Western United States.

The site’s connection to the adjacent agrarian environment was reinforced through use of swaths of grasses, seasonal color and strategic circulation that offers views of vines and rolling hills. American Society of Landscape Architects National Honor Award.
This project thoughtfully blends a new family residence with a restored native environment. Responsible water use was a key goal, while aiming for a contemporary, restrained, and integrated design. Maximizing views and minimizing earthwork influenced the location of the home, courtyard, and terraces.
The client’s goals of restricting water use and establishing a light-handed aesthetic that blends with the landscape were achieved in this property’s transformation. Sophisticated, clean lines integrate with natural elements in this minimalist design that honors the site and its resources. At this 1901 historic Neo-Classical mansion, the previously dark and isolated rear yard was transformed into a vibrant space with panoramic views. Situated on a new garage rooftop, the garden offers year-round plant color, a lilac bluestone terrace that transitions into the historic home and an elegant side entry staircase. At this renovated 1940’s home, SLLA crafted a site design that connects paths, terraces, pool and lawn to mature tree groves, creating an integrated surround to the contemporary residence.
The renovation strikes an ideal balance between architecture and landscape. A cluttered property was simplified and unified, allowing soaring trees to dominate the site and complement the new minimalist structures. American Society of Landscape Architects Northern California Chapter Merit Award
Bordering a wooded park, this garden blends modern forms and lush plantings. SLLA designed a wedge-shaped terrace to visually widen the site and extend the home’s living area. The art studio was encased in an ivy-covered framework, creating a green cube focal point. The home’s modern interior is reflected in the garden’s contemporary shapes. SLLA highlighted this site’s spectacular views through placement of a shimmering blue mosaic pool and multi-level Russet Sandstone terraces. The design extends the living space outside with a courtyard family room with fireplace, a gourmet kitchen, a dining patio and restful water features.
SLLA carried the spirit of light-filled interiors outside to a clean, simple main courtyard, which is framed by a bosque of olive trees. A woven metal screen defines the outdoor dining area. Warm-toned finishes, plantings and a fountain reflect the interior color palette. American Society of Landscape Architects Northern California Chapter Merit Award
