  • New York City & Mid-Atlantic

The Brooklyn Studio is an architecture and interior design firm committed to restoring and enhancing New York City’s historic fabric.

Our approach to architecture and design is at once rigorously academic and endlessly playful. We take seriously our role as stewards of the built environment — always mindful of the historical, cultural, and environmental context in which we work. We also embrace the opportunity to modernize and to personalize, meeting each of our clients’ unique programmatic goals. We delight in playing with traditional forms, from the bonding of brick and the arrangement of windows to the appointment of fixtures and furnishings. The result is a body of work that reflects the very nature of architecture and design: a conversation across time, transcending generations, cultures, and sensibilities.

The Brooklyn Studio was founded in 1997 by Brendan Coburn, FAIA. Today, our studio is comprised of more than thirty architects, interior designers, and creatives who work across a variety of building types throughout the northeast. Our team hails from five continents, and our office is home to seven native languages. We believe that the power of diversity enriches our work: it provides us with a broad framework to understand and engage with our community, address challenges, and design innovative solutions.

Featured Projects

Cobble Hill Italianate, No. 1

The primary design challenge for this project was creating both distinct places for the family to live their day to day lives and also a whole floor dedicated to formal entertainment. The clients entertain large dinners on a monthly basis as part of their profession. We solved this by adding an extension on the garden and parlor levels. This allowed the garden level to function as the daily family operations center and the parlor level to be party central. The kitchen on the garden level is large enough to dine in and accommodate a large catering crew.

Cobble Hill Italianate, No. 2

This 1840s Italianate four-story rowhouse in the Cobble Hill Historic District had its interior spaces divided and modified over the years to function as a multi-family building. Our client, a family of five, sought to restore the house to its former glory and transform the building into a warm inviting home. The renovation included new skylights, enlarged window bays, and thoughtfully framed interior spaces designed to maintain a visual connection to rear garden views. Expansive openings were introduced between inner rooms to maximize daylight at the core of the house.

Cobble Hill Rowhouse

This newly built row house in NYC’s first landmarked district blends contemporary compositions with traditional design language based around the proportions of a typical Brooklyn rowhouse; the interior utilizes vertical connections to bring natural light throughout all of the spaces, and the exterior reimagines the local vernacular, using sustainable building materials detailed with modern proportions.

Boerum Hill Italianate, No. 2

Originally built in the 1890s, this Boerum Hill townhouse went through a complete make over, from beams and joists to finishes and fixtures. When the structure was reported to be crumbling and it was determined that about half of it would have to be completely rebuilt, the couple decided they would go all in to make the rowhouse their dream home. What ensued was a full gut renovation of the three-story structure and the addition of a top floor primary suite for the clients and their two children.
