Work + Sea is an interdisciplinary design studio – an artist-designer duo who apply suggestions of narrative to their design of objects and environments – inspired by their interactions with, and unfiltered responses to, the world.

Lara is formally trained in fine art and Michael in architecture. Lara’s affinity with the phenomenological and interest in the unmapped worlds of possibility that exist within the unknown, paired with Michael’s linear drive to investigate the enigma behind why something “works”, alongside his fascination with structure in all its forms, are the contrasting perspectives which provide the creative spark behind Work + Sea.

West Village Residence

The residence of the creative director of a CFDA recognized NYC fashion brand known for its prints is the setting of Work + Sea’s latest interior project. Working with the client’s openness to color and pattern, the 1,200 sqft, 3 bedroom duplex in the West Village, NYC, was completely gut renovated. Work + Sea was responsible for all of the design, construction administration, and custom finishes and furniture throughout. This project was published as the cover story of Elle Decor in May 2017.

Astor Place Residence

An art collector’s apartment on Astor Place, NYC, was re-imagined by Work + Sea in 2014. This 1,300 sqft, two bedroom, 2.5 bathroom apartment, full of contemporary and 19th century artwork which had to be sensitively incorporated into the redesign, was updated with a brick and mortar, ethanol-burning fireplace, refinished wood flooring, finishes and fixtures in the master bath, powder room and kitchen, new lighting, paint, and furniture throughout. Several pieces of furniture and the wallpaper in the powder room were custom-designed and fabricated by Work + Sea.
