I’ve long held the misconception that an excess of outdoor space was a requirement for a personal sauna. Then while visiting a friend’s condo, I was amazed to find a cedar sauna wedged among the postage-stamp area out front. For her, the routine detoxification of a sauna is a priority, and when she tells me she takes a quick sauna before school pickup each afternoon, it has me rethinking my own priorities. Here are 10 great-looking saunas for your own outdoor space—no matter the size.
Above: Based in Devon in the UK, Out of the Valley makes a collection of architectural saunas with an exacting quality. The Falco Sauna is one of their more popular models with a Corten steel overhang roof, black larch cladding (a feature of all of their saunas), Thermo Aspen internal cladding, and the option for heating with a wood-fired or electric heater; prices start at £55,400 through Out of the Valley. Above: Another UK sauna company Heartwood Saunas, makes their saunas with FSC-certified timber from sustainably managed forests in Wales and the UK. The Arbor X is one style with a full-height glass wall, insulated walls, and a HUUM sauna stove. The Arbor X is one of their larger models seating up to 10 people for £65,000 including VAT. Above: US brand Almost Heaven specializes in Finnish-style steam saunas with Harvia heaters.
