City by City: What’s Your Favorite Local Garden Radio Show?

Do you have a favorite local radio show that offers gardening tips? Maybe there’s a helpful host who answers listeners’ questions about when it’s safe to plant tomatoes and how to get rid of slugs?

Atlanta: Walter Reeves is The Georgia Gardener; listen to him live on Saturday mornings on WSB, FM 95.5 news and AM 750.

Bakersfield: Co-hosted by Dale Edwards and Lindsay Ono, Country Garden is “Central California’s garden talk radio. We will talk about everything from turf to trees, plants to ponds, okra to oleander, or anything that you want to talk about.” Tune in on Saturday mornings to 1180 AM and 96.1 FM.

Baltimore:  Garden Sense co-hosts Jos Roozen and Rick Fowler offer tips for local gardeners on WMAL 680 AM.

Boston: Host Jim Zoppo answers listeners’ gardening questions every week on The Tim Zoppo Gardening Show on Sunday mornings on WRKO.

Chicago: In search of a sustainable lifestyle, The Green Divas interview celebrities such as Fran Drescher and Mariel Hemingway, as well as “environmental and sustainability experts, natural health nuts and creative foodies. Gardening subjects such as DIY pesticides, 19 foods you can re-grow from scraps, and soil prep 101.

Coast-to-Coast: With scientific breakthroughs and new gardening techniques, Garden America hosts Bryan Main, John Bagnasco, and Sharon Asakawa on Biz Talk Radio also have a podcast version.

Dallas/Ft. Worth: Veteran host Neil Sperry (who has been talking gardens for more than 20 years) talks Texas Gardening on WBAP/820 AM.

Florida:  The South Florida Gardening Show onWZAB 880 AM, with host Mark Benson, “is special. We only talk about gardening in our special area of the world. Zone 10. We’re sub-tropical.”

Los Angeles: Nick Federoff on Gardening has been on the air since 1988; for two hours a week host Federoff takes calls from local gardeners who phone him at KCAL.

Memphis: In the Garden hosts Kenneth Mabry and Vader Vance answer listeners’ questions and offer gardening tips on WREC.

Minneapolis: On Smart Gardens with host Denny Long, horticulture experts from the University of Minnesota answer listeners’ questions. When and where: weekly on station WCCO.

Philadelphia: With host Mike McGrath, You Bet Your Garden is a nationally syndicated radio show that originates on WHYY-FM: “fiercely organic advice to gardeners far and wide.”

Portland, Oregon: In the Garden with Mark Darcy on KXL offers local gardeners seasonal tips and advice.

Seattle: On Gardening with Ciscoe, host Ciscoe Morris solves gardening dilemmas on 97.3 FM KIRO.

St. Louis: On Saturday mornings, Garden Hotline host and life-long gardener Mike Miller answers listeners’ gardening questions on KMOX.

Toronto: Host Charlie Dobbin on The Garden Show answers callers question on 740 AM.

Utah: Utah Public Radio’s Zesty Garden show with host Bryan Earl covers wide-ranging topics related to the outdoors, including tips on hike and bike trail routes, literary musings, and a “Wait, Wait…Don’t Plant That!” segment to help gardeners in Utah and southern Idaho choose plants that will be successful in their growing zone.

Vermont: On Vermont Garden Journal horticulturalist and host Charlie Nardozzi offers a weekly 2:41-minute snippet on topics ranging from how to plant columbines to how well houseplants can clean the air in your home. Listen to the archived podcast versions here.
