Gardenista Holiday Gift Guide 2023: Editors’ Picks

December 6, 2023

Aside from a healthier ecosystem and plenty of both sunshine and rain, what else is on our wish list this holiday season? A chic watering can, thermal-lined jumpsuit, botanical-inspired calendar and more.

Above:  Topping Clare’s wish list is delivery of fresh narcissi. “I treat myself to a big box of these from Scented Narcissi, and they always feel like the biggest indulgence. They smell amazing and fill the house with their scent. They are also a great pick me up after Christmas when everything feels pretty bleak.” Prices start at £19.75.
Back in \20\2\1, Fan wrote about Fabien Cappello&#8\2\17;s watering cans, made in Mexico from thin sheets of tin normally used to fashion cake molds. &#8\2\20;They quickly sold out,&#8\2\2\1; she says. &#8\2\20;So I was delighted to find them on Gardenheir recently!&#8\2\2\1; The Regadera #4 and #5 Watering Cans are \$88 to \$\1\18.

Annie learned from Erin French of The Lost Kitchen to keep a pair of clippers in the glovebox &#8\2\20;so you&#8\2\17;re always prepared for a spontaneous roadside forage,&#8\2\2\1; she says. &#8\2\20;I recently treated myself to a pair of pruning shears at Snug Harbor Farm here in Maine, and they came in handy a couple days later when I came across a rather abundant winterberry bush, pulled over, and procured enough for a little DIY wreath.&#8\2\2\1; These Pruning Shears by Jungle Club are just \$\18 at Pigment.

Marie, our resident gardener-forager-cook, suggests Joe Woodhouse&#8\2\17;s More Daily Veg cookbook, filled with &#8\2\20;soul-satisfying, deceptively simple, and deeply inspiring vegetarian meals by food-photographer turned author,&#8\2\2\1; she says. &#8\2\20;Winter-friendly dishes include Roast Brussels Sprouts with Whipped Tahini, Spicy Tomato Chutney and Crouton Crumbs, and a reviving Silken Tofu dressed with Szechuan Vinegar Sauce. If you&#8\2\17;re feeling generous, double the gift by including Joe&#8\2\17;s first book, Your Daily Veg. You won&#8\2\17;t be sorry.&#8\2\2\1; More Daily Veg is \$\25.\10 at Bookshop.org.

&#8\2\20;I&#8\2\17;ve been eyeing this water bottle sling for hiking for months,&#8\2\2\1; reports Laura. &#8\2\20;Maybe I&#8\2\17;ll treat myself for Christmas?&#8\2\2\1; Route Unknown&#8\2\17;s \1L Bottle Bag is £55 and designed to fit a \1-liter Nalgene bottle.

File this one under &#8\2\20;if money were no object&#8\2\2\1;: ORCA&#8\2\17;s Birdhouse #\1, featuring rough sawn siding and a shingled roof, is on both Laura and Fan&#8\2\17;s object-of-desire list. It&#8\2\17;s \$\295 for natural cedar; \$350 for charred cedar (pictured).

Kendra writes in to recommend Wylding&#8\2\17;s Moss Green Suit (\$\207): &#8\2\20;Designed for people who live in &#8\2\16;temperate&#8\2\17; climes, this lightweight, fleece-lined boiler suit is ideal for winter swimmers but is loved by gardeners, too. Or, in the case of Chippy Flower Farm in Chipping Norton, by cold swimming gardeners. It&#8\2\17;s not bulky, and is all that&#8\2\17;s needed over a swimsuit or silk long johns.&#8\2\2\1;

Also on Annie&#8\2\17;s wish list: &#8\2\20;A wonky, wild wreath. I love the ones from Field Floral in Portland, Maine. Megan (of Field) made one for us to hang at the entry at our wedding; it now graces our front door.&#8\2\2\1; An Evergreen Wreath is \$95.

Both Joy and Clare are in need of warm gardening loves. Joy is eyeing this pair and Clare woud like to receive the lined, waterproof Winter Gloves (pictured) from Niwaki; \$\13.
