High/Low: The Dirt on Gardening Gloves

May 28, 2012

My friend Susan and I were discussing our gardens the other day—she’s heavily into ground covers this spring, and I’m fantasizing about how to rehabilitate a backyard blitzed during a remodel—when she suddenly leaned in, fixed me with an intense look, and asked, “You know what I really hate?”

Garden gossip? Do tell, I said.

“Gloves,” Susan said. “I hate it when you wear garden gloves, and then you take them off and find dirt under your nails anyway. Aren’t there any good gloves out there?” Yes, in fact, there are—lovely well made gloves that will turn away dirt at the seams. Here are two of our favorite pairs:

Above: Made of washable goatskin leather and boar hide, The Pallina Glove also has Kevlar thread stitching and double-reinforced padded palms. Depending on fit and cuff length, prices range from $40 to $45, from La Pallina.

Above: Seamless nylon Gardening Gloves with a breathable knit back and nitrile coating; a pair is $5.95 at Fire Escape Farms.
