Object of Desire: Muji Hut

May 17, 2017

Muji’s newest hut (coming in August): a tiny garden getaway with a covered porch, with a blackened facade sided in burnt cedar. Price: $27,000.

The prefab Muji Hut is small with an interior footprint of 98 square feet, &#8\2\20;but the porch and the high shed roof create a space large enough for 3–4 people to relax in,&#8\2\2\1; notes Muji. &#8\2\20;The large window at the entrance was originally made to be a shop’s sliding door. Light and wind visit through another smaller window.&#8\2\2\1;

So far Muji has plans to ship the huts only within Japan.

From the back, the black Muji Hut has a simple profile. The charred siding is blackened by a traditional shou sugi ban technique.

Plywood interior walls &#8\2\20;are left untreated so you can design the interior any way you like,&#8\2\2\1; says Muji. Twin beds welcome. Or at least one twin bed.
