Slow Design: Reefer Sails in Devon, England

April 7, 2010

Founded by Emma and Mark Turner, a couple living in rural Devon, England, Reefer Sails repurposes marine and aviation sails as deck chairs, directors chairs, pillows, and totes. Because they live “in a house constantly full of children, friends, pets, and mud,” the couple has designed their products with an eye to withstanding the rough and tumble of family life while also paying attention to aesthetics and quality of construction. Read the couple’s compelling sustainability manifesto at Reefer Sails.

N.B.: If you are an owner of an unwanted sail, send it to Reefer Sails and they will use it to make a new product (and send you an item from the range as a thank you).

Above: Reefer’s Classic Collection Deck Chairs are made from European beech (from managed forests) and cost £79.
