Splendor in the Grass: Tarp as Picnic Blanket

May 21, 2012

Lately, we’re ready to banish gingham from our picnicking experience in favor of hard-wearing accessories; so we were pleasantly surprised to see the return of Toast’s recycled tarpaulin this summer.

The cotton tarp fabric is recovered from military tents and trucks with variations in each piece and a natural distressing and unevenness of color. Color and texture changes with exposure to sunlight and seasonal weather.

Above: The Tarpaulin Picnic Mat measures 72 inches long by 52 inches wide; £49.

Above: The Tarpaulin Terrace Cushion features a stitched handle for easy carrying and a cushion filled with cotton remnants; £49

Above: A detail of the rugged stitching.

N.B.: This post is an update; the original story ran on March 3, 2011.
