Description from Joey Roth
Self-watering planters designed for use indoors or outside with herbs and succulents. Made from Terracotta and Zisha: naturally porous unglazed earthenware. The idea for the Self-Watering Planters came from planning my garden in Southern California. While researching irrigation methods, I discovered the Olla. This is a simple clay vessel that’s buried near a plant’s roots to provide a constant trickle of water. Farmers in arid regions have used some form of the Olla for thousands of years. It remains an efficient way to irrigate without much water lost to evaporation. Olla gardening involves minimal human intervention in the natural interaction between roots and soil. I wanted to bring the elegance of this irrigation method indoors, and the Self-Watering Planters were the result.
How the Self-Watering Planters Work
The self-watering planter’s porous walls allow water in the central chamber to seep into the surrounding soil. The plants’ roots find the source of water in the soil and grow around the central chamber. Through capillary action, the plants draw just as much water as they need.
