Description from Tula House
In collaboration with Rhode Island artist Kelli Rae Adams, hips is Tula’s Summer 2017 stoneware planter collection. Kelli Rae Adams studied ceramics in Japan, where she apprenticed over a period of five years with Tetsuro Hatabe, a master potter in the Karatsu tradition.
The history of the clay dictated the collection’s name and style. All of the material used in hips comes from a previous performance installation called “Aftershock: Sampling Impact. The piece consisted of Kelli, a choreographer, an ensemble of dancers, a sound artist and a dramaturg using the clay as a surface to imprint and record their bodies as they performed the dance.
