Stoneware Planting Crock (two-gallon)

Historically, our planting crock was originally used as a vessel to store food, preserve and pickle vegetables, and even make potpourri. With a drainage hole for efficient watering, the crocks can house potted plants, herbs, flowers and vegetables. The salt-glazed, lead-free stoneware is sturdy and chip-resistant, allowing Mom to place the crock indoors or out. Made in Ohio exclusively for Kaufmann Mercantile.

DeWit Garden Tool Set

The trowel, cultivator and dibber of this tool trio are made with Swedish hand-forged boron steel and crafted in the Netherlands. They come with a lifetime warranty.

The trowel features a sharp edge from top to bottom, made to slice through soil. The dibber creates small holes to plant seeds, seedlings or bulbs. The cultivator rips weeds and grass roots out of the soil.

New England Heirloom Seeds

Passed down through generations of farmers and home gardeners, an heirloom seed is one that has been cultivated for at least 50 years. Reliable, dependable and offering an impressive range of flavors and shapes, these plants provide a glimpse into a time before widespread genetic modification and hybridization turned a trip to the grocery store into a far more predictable event. The four varieties of New England Heirloom Seeds included in this set for Mom are:

• Thomas Laxton Peas: Reliable, consistent and sweet, these plants produce a generous amount of peas. They grow up to three feet tall, while pods reach about three to five inches.
• Parsley: Sometimes called Italian Parsley, the leaves of this herb are flat, not curled. A delightful garnish and seasoning for soups, meats, sauces and more.
• Paris White Cos Lettuce: Large oval heads, which have an especially crisp texture and a pleasing mild flavor. Today, this type of lettuce is often referred to as Romaine.
• Thyme: An aromatic perennial prized for both its seasoning and medicinal qualities. A wonderful addition to meats, mushrooms, salad dressings and even cocktails.
