NIWAKI, JAKE HOBSON
In Japan, trees pervade the landscape, holding a lofty position in the country’s spiritual and sociocultural domain. Fine-tuned pruning techniques are used to coax out the essence of each tree, or niwaki. Jake Hobson learned these techniques in Osaka before returning to Britain to adapt them to our gardens. Here he covers the history and culture of niwaki, encourages us to venture beyond conventional pruning to cultivate our very own niwaki, offering ideas and advice on how to do so.
