Product Information
“I heard from an Indian friend that sometimes it takes about 72 hours by train to return home from the city. It’s not rare at all to wait for hours to transfer to a long distance train so there is a lot of time when there is nothing else to do but sleep at the station platform and wait. People would carry bedding like a thin mattress rolled up and fastened with a belt to spread out on the platform or in the train to catch up on sleep and ease the fatigue of a long journey. It is common for each person to customize their sleeping bag by adding pockets and handles to make their traveling a little more convenient. Taking inspiration from this bedding, we made a compact nomadic mattress that folds up and closes with a belt. On the upper part, there is an opening to make a pillow by inserting a jacket or other valuables. To protect the mattress from moisture on the ground, the fabric is coated with wax. The cover is also removable for washing. Because of these practical additions, this product has ended up becoming much better than the original Indian one.
You can keep it in your car in case of emergency, as an extra bed for your friend or for when you have to spend the night at the office. As infrastructure continues to develop in India, travel inconvenience is slowly disappearing, but there is still something attractive about this portable bed. Perhaps the day may come when the Indians will look back at this sleeping bag with fondness. This item, though associated with inconvenience, definitely has a very special nostalgic feel to it.”
