Densely branched, rounded, deciduous shrub with grayish green leaves that are aromatic when crushed. Very versatile plant that is tolerant of a wide range of soils and conditions, including salt spray from the sea or from road salts. Grayish white fruits in late summer are covered with an aromatic waxy substance, which is used to make bayberry candles and soaps.
