Description from Design Within Reach
Originally known as Davey & Co., the company was established in 1885 and has roots dating back to the shipyards of 19th-century London. Its clients back then were the marine merchants operating out of London’s West India Docks, whose ships were outfitted with Davey lighting. These iconic lights graced the decks of many of history’s best-known vessels, including, it is said, the Titanic and HMS Ark Royal. As the demand for navigation aids declined over the years, the interest in Davey’s industrial modern aesthetic increased among architects and designers, and the company continued to thrive. However, the challenges facing British manufacturing brought the threat of closure and an overseas move, until Peter Bowles stepped in. He purchased the company, which is now based in Oxford, England, and is proud to have a team that includes Tim James, whose grandfather joined Davey & Co in 1897. As part Original BTC, which Peter Bowles founded, Davey Lighting now supplies marine, industrial and decorative lighting to residential and contract customers – making Davey available to the public (instead of only to the trade) for the first time. All components are handcrafted by small specialist UK suppliers according to centuries-old traditions. Bulbs (not included) small: 40W/GLS/E26; medium: 75W/GLS/E26; large: 100W/GLS/E26.
