Description from Manufactum
The English variation. With a climbing trellis.
This English system makes soil sack cultivation accessible to hobby gardeners, who want to cultivate tomatoes, cucumbers, or beans (and other climbing vegetables) on a small scale and in a space-saving manner. A climbing support for tall growing plants is immediately integrated into the unit. It is suitable for soil sacks with volumes up to 70 litres.
Pragmatic solution. And water conserving: soil sack cultivation.
What may sound odd has actually been commonly used in commercial farming for quite some time, for example, when cultivating tomatoes. Young plants no longer remain in beds or pots; instead, they come directly into a soil sack – the foil is cut open at numerous locations and the plants are placed inside. The closed system allows for highly economic water use; the soil sacks are open only at the plant holes. Underneath, one should prick them (simply with a fork), in order to prevent waterlogging. Water is hardly lost due to evaporation or seepage. With good soil, it is also guaranteed that soil-borne diseases cannot spread.
