Espalier—or trained—trees never fail to look really impressive, whether they form a grand allée on a country estate or are used simply as single specimen trees against a stone or timber wall.
Here we take you through the steps to get started with your own espalier.
Use rot-proof garden twine or soft ties to secure each join.
Step 2: Build a Support System
Step 3: Add Support Posts
Planting holes should be twice as wide as the root balls.
Step 4: Tie Bamboo Frames to Trees
Then gently tie branches to the supports using soft ties. If a branch can’t be bent close to the support then tie in loosely, gently encouraging growth in the right direction.
Step 6: Be Patient
Eventually as branches thicken, the bamboo support can be removed (but in the meantime it adds some vertical structure and interest – while you sit back and wait for the main event).
